Intermodal Resonance of In-plane Free Vibrations of Suspended Cables
نویسنده
چکیده
The weakly nonlinear in-plane free vibrations of a single suspended cable, or a coupled system of suspended cables, may be classified as gravity modes (no tension variations to leading order) and elasto-gravity modes (tension and vertical displacement equally important). The gravity mode (probably the most common type of vibration of relatively inelastic spans) does not exist for particular values of the problem parameter. The reason is that for these parameter values the 1st and 2nd harmonic are in resonance. This resonance has been analysed here in detail by an application of the Lindstedt-Poincaré technique. The leading order 1st and 2nd harmonic can only exist together with each other. As a result, the tension, albeit of 2nd harmonic, does not vanish at leading order and the mode is not anymore truly dominated by gravity alone. The analysis is worked out here in detail for a single span but the results for a system of coupled spans seem to be similar. It is conjectured that designing the suspended cable with parameter values right at this resonance will delay or hinder the occurrence of galloping.

Dynamic Instability Analysis of Transverse Vibrations of Functionally Graded Rectangular Plates under Moving Masses
In this paper, dynamic instability due to parametric and external resonances of moderately thick functionally graded rectangular plates, under successive moving masses, is examined. Plate mass per unit volume and Young’s modulus are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness of the plate and obey a power-law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituent. The considered rectangu...
متن کاملNonlinear Free Vibrations of Coupled Spans of Overhead Transmission Lines
The weakly nonlinear, freely vibrating motion of a system of coupled spans of suspended overhead transmission lines is studied. It is shown that the natural vibration is the gravity mode, of which the unsteady tension component vanishes in the first harmonic. The problem was born out of a study of the phenomenon of galloping, which is a high amplitude periodic oscillation of overhead transmissi...

In this paper, two kinds of vibrations are considered for a composite Timoshenko rotor: longitudinal-torsional vibration and two plane transverse one. The kinetic and potential energies and virtual work due to the gyroscopic effects are calculated and the set of six governing equations and boundary conditions are derived using Hamilton principle. Differential quadrature method (DQM) is used as ...
متن کاملFree linear vibrations of cables under thermal stress
This paper aims at investigating the effect of thermal stress on free linear vibrations of cables. An analytical model extending Irvine’s theory to thermoelasticity is proposed. In addition to the sag-extensibility parameter, this model yields a second dimensionless independent parameter related to the temperature change. Some general two-dimensional contour plots are presented giving the relat...
متن کاملStability Analysis and Robust PID Control of Cable Driven Robots Considering Elasticity in Cables
In this paper robust PID control of fully-constrained cable driven parallel manipulators with elastic cables is studied in detail. In dynamic analysis, it is assumed that the dominant dynamics of cable can be approximated by linear axial spring. To develop the idea of control for cable robots with elastic cables, a robust PID control for cable driven robots with ideal rigid cables is firstly de...
